...........oh and by the way if you are actually going to get stoned with soft fruits and whipped with bamboo leaves can I have in to?  It's a weird fetish of mine I've picked up from my time in our Communist School System!! Wink Wink

James, I plan on being at Rollin Greens in Bellerose tonight. Maybe I can meet you then. I'll admit, I was torn by CPs post yesterday when I read it on the way home from work last night, as if I'm being demonized on this forum or something...

Because of the 60 degree day in Central Park during Christmas week and the last 6 days which have averaged over 10 degrees above normal all charges regarding "Torch Mongering" have been dropped in the case of OTI security vs. Math23x7.

All beach, normal tanning, and other OTI privileges have been fully restored.

There will also be reparations paid to Mike for false imprisonment in the sum of 100,000 bananas and 200,000 coconuts. The OTI Treasury is now bare and I will be resigning in disgrace at midnight tonight as the Director of the Treasury. I will still retain my title as Grand High Exalted Mystique Ruler.

Charges will soon be filed against the Director of OTI Security, the infamous Snowman, for excessive force including, sand in the eyes while open, forced tanning with a less than 36 sunblock, confiscation of Hawaiian shirts and having the letter T (for Torch Mongering) tanned into Mikes forehead during one particularly brutal tanning session. May OTI justice treat Snow Man accordingly.

lol! lol! lol! lol! lol! lol!

This is "spit out my coffee" worthy!

Yes, woe to he who would dare disparage and threaten the great and powerful Math in his amazing memory skills. It will take all my powers of persuasion to convince Mike not to take up his grievance with Emperor Frank and bring truly catastrophic consequences down upon OTI's leadership.May I suggest you and Snow disappear for a week in the hinterlands of some
far off sector of OTI until I Docstox, Director Of Parliament, use all of my persuasive and groveling skills to smooth out this wrinkle that befalls us.

Now that the Treasury is bare, an increase in taxes from the 25% bannana/coconut rate to 39% will be in order to replenish the Treasury as a result of this malfeasance.I will attempt to assuage the Islanders anticipated wrath while you and Snow are on the lam, by trying to frame the increase as necessary infrastructure spending on the Island.I will claim the tax increase is necessary to "Make OTI Great Again".

OT: "Off-Topic Island" - Page 28 Empty Re: OT: "Off-Topic Island"

Post by billg315 Thu Dec 29, 2016 8:14 am

Good morning gentlemen. While I have once before visited OTI on personal business I have been brought here on weather business this morning. I come from the mainland as the head of a Task Force that monitors Human Rights violations around the weather boards when there is a reported need for outside monitoring to ensure fairness. (disclaimer: this is not a government sanctioned body but rather a 501c(3) type organization that works in conjunction with, but not under the direction of, nor with the official powers of, any government organization, legislative body or executive authority. We are in, but not of, a larger group, "Society for the Prevention of the Abuse, Cruelty and Endangerment of Weather Information Posters" Or the SPACEWIP as they prefer to be called as it is shorter to say, slightly at least). It was brought to our attention that there are potential violations on the island. The charges are as follows:
COUNT ONE: Mike (aka Math 23X7) has been Falsely accused of Torch Mongering, when simply bringing true news of actual warmth to the Island;
COUNT TWO: Punishments have been imposed without due process;
COUNT THREE: Punishments are of a particularly cruel and shall we say, umm, unusual nature.
Now upon my arrival and review, it appears that the leadership of OTI has already taken what we refer to as "self-corrective actions." These actions are to be applauded as they show a willingness to address this alleged malfeasance. Therefore the SPACEWIP and its affiliated, but not directly related or legally responsible, monitoring committee will not seek any further global sanctions against OTI. However we do today announce that you will be under continued monitoring for a period of at least three months to ensure no further violations of human rights and dignity occur.
p.s., while here on my monitoring business, are there any good bars around?

Well, my good man, may I suggest the Coconut Room at the OTI Bannana Hilton for their famed Island concoctions.Former King Mugsy will be happy to oblige arranging...ummmm..companionship from his connections with the Queen and her minions.

We at OTI are thankful that SPACEWIP recognizes our sefl-regulatory mechanisms perform like a well oiled machine to correct any type of cruel or unusual weather related incidents that may occur from time to time either here or on the Mainland. The frailties of human nature inevitably will lead to unfortunate incidents such as this but in the spirit of winter weather comraderie, I am sure thie brief episode will be stricken from the annals of OTI history and our Island will continue to shine as that great City on the Hill covered with snow.

If you would like a personal tour of OTI, do not hesitate to contact me at the OTI Sanitarium.I have been putting in many extra hours preparing for a possible large influx of S and E Mainlanders that may seek therapy for SDS (snow deprivation syndrome) as a result of long range model mayhem in these recent weeks.I am sure I can tear myself away from my urgent and pressing duties to guide you, Head of SPACEWIP, on an island tour.

Thank you for your hospitality. I surely will check out the Coconut Room at the Bannana Hilton as it seems like a fine drinking establishment and luckily SPACEWIP pays all my expenses, including food and drink, when I'm on monitoring missions. It was the biggest perk when they hired me next to the dental plan. I look forward to touring the island. I must tell you, your concerns about an influx at the Sanitarium are well founded. My organization has noticed that many on the Mainland are becoming agitated by the 'slow' start to the winter snow season. This is in turn agitating many other Mainlanders who feel strongly that the best of winter is yet to come. All of the agitation is, well, agitating. So for the time being OTI seems a lovely place to be. And I'd rather be at the Coconut Room than the Sanitarium.

I think the residents of OTI are now coming to grips with the fact that Christmas should be on January 7th as opposed to December 25th. Because there is a possibility of snow of the 7th. And even if it does not snow, it looks to get cold. The last few December 25th's have featured temps in the 50s on the mainland. As CP mentioned, people nowadays think it's a normal occurrence, but it wasn't before my time. We can all legitimately dream of a white Christmas if it was on the 7th because there is somewhat of a legitimate snow threat.

And I want to be clear that all possibilities are on the table. I am not committing to one solution. If a snowstorm does not materialize, I am not the reason for it. And if it does materialize, well, again, I am not the reason for it. All of us have a mission and that is to make OTI a great place to live. With the possible warmup that has been discussed on the mainland, I would like for Parliament to get the Sanitarium ready for those that want comfort in the event of either a lack of snow or a warmup.

All hail Emperor Frank!

Welcome back Mike, I'm glad all legal issues were cleared up and your name as well.

I hope you're using your newfound OTI wealth judiciously now that judgement has been passed and the entire OTI Treasury is yours. Snow Man will be sentenced tomorrow and your input regarding his sentence is welcome.

I will keep this short as I am still in mourning over the last second loss in the Rose Bowl last night by my beloved Penn State Nittany Lions, along with the loss of my position as the OTI Director of the Treasury. Is a Director really necessary when there is no money in the treasury? It would be rather superfluous.

I still remain as always

Yea, that Penn State game was brutal to watch.

I actually went to a Penn State football game at Beaver Stadium last November when they faced Iowa.  This was the view from where I sat:

CP I didn't know you were a fellow PSU fan. What a brutal end to an otherwise great game. Fear not though: I think a top 5 preseason ranking is in the cards for them this coming season. With that said, I think you may be better off not being in the role of treasurer because if the storm this weekend doesn't deliver the goods I fear someone will have to find the money for a massive expansion of the Sanitarium.

Even if we were to somehow miss out on the upcoming snowstorm, the fact that we are talking about a potential east coast snowstorm for tomorrow, January 7th, is why I hope that there is a bill circulating through the OTI Parliament requesting the Christmas change date to 1/7. And actually, one of the most well known snow events happened on January 7th, in 1996:

CP has brought up before on the mainland that CPK measured less snow from that event than any of the surrounding NWS stations. I know there are plenty of people that question that.

Math, we at OTI Parliament take your proposal very seriously and we have drafted OTI Bill, CB117, (coconut bannana) as per your request.Parlaimentary debate is now in session and the final results will be announced soon.I will admit the submission of that amazing video of the Mainland area wide Blizzard of 1996 can only help your cause.

As to disgraced former Treasury Director CP, Parliament has decided to go into special session to determine if he will be re-instated into his former position after the financial state of OTI is strengthened.I am sure you will agree CP's work in this position has been exemplary and I think your capacity for compassion and understanding will allow you to forgive the former Director of the Treasury for his momentary slip into temporary insanity vis a vis the "alleged" torching caper. The last second loss of his beloved Penn State should be adequate punishment in the matter as karma has exacted its terrible toll.

Now, I must return to the OTI Sanitarium as there has been a huge influx of patients from N and W areas of the Mainland due to another huge snowstorm again tracking S and E!!!

Be assured members of the monitoring team have no objection to CP's return to the post of Treasurer - particularly given his allegiance to the Nittany Lions. We endorse this proposal from our barstool in the Coconut Room.

Billig:

It all began in the late 60's when I was 8 or so. I followed them through a couple of undefeated seasons and couldn't understand why they kept ending up 2 in the polls (no playoffs then).

Then at age 17 I watched the 1978 sugar bowl where #1 Penn state played #2 Alabama and lost 14-7 because they couldn't get the ball in from the 1 on four consecutive runs. It frustrates me to this day.

Vindicated in 82 and 86 though with the national championships, only to be frustrated again in 94 with another #2 ranking with a 12-0 team that BTW beat Ohio St 63-7.

Just happy they're back despite the frustrating Rose Bowl Loss.

All of that rings very familiar from my knowledge of their history. I grew up in PA and watched them as a kid rooting for them in the 82 and 86 championship seasons (even though there wasn't technically a championship game then). My sister went to school there before me and I entered school there (as a meteorology major originally) as she was graduating. I was a student in Happy Valley for the 1994 season (my first year up there) so saw the undefeated season, and was at the beat-down of Ohio State that year (I went to every home game that year). Of course only to have Nebraska steal the title from us via the polls. But yes, despite the frustration of that Rose Bowl loss, they are definitely back on the national stage -- in a good way.

I think the only conclusion we can make is that whoever makes the snowfall measurements at the Central Park Convservancy is affiliated with the zookeeper. I also request Parliament to pass legislation that anyone who enters OTI must be questions for affiliations with the zookeeper. If there are ties, we can crack the code which would lead us to solve the age old problem of the frequent undercounts for official NYC snow totals we experience on the mainland. The one who is behind all this has given us all SUAS: Snow Undercount Aggravation Syndrome. By solving this case, we can extinguish the disease from this land.

On a sidenote: Yesterday evening, I took on a strong effort to measure the snow at my location in the mainland. Since I do not have a snowboard and do not have any good location in the backyard since it's small (I mean it is Queens after all). I have to rely on sidewalk measurements. And I need to make sure it's not under tree branches or anything of that sort. I also have to find locations that had not been shoveled. I thought for sure I would have seven inches at the very least. But alas, after measuring in multiple locations, it came up consistent at 6.8". I would have thought this would be a low end outlier in my immediate surroundings, but there were some locations that were lower including Garden City, which measured 6.5" according to Upton. The 8.2" near JFK appears an outlier in and of itself though. Of course, the snowdrifts from the strong winds were over a foot.

But no excuse for the NWS stations, they have the equipment necessary to measure snow, it just comes up inaccurate sometimes....

In regards to your request for an interrogation of any possible suspects entering OTI suspected of SUAS activity, I have a film clip of an OTI Interrogation Team handling an alleged snow undermeasurment perpetrator. The alleged perpetrator is clearly someone who would be affiliated with the Zookeeper. When further information is posted, the results of the interrogation will be made public in OTI.We strive for transparency here on OTI.

End of an era: KYW no longer broadcasting snow-day school closing numbers.
This of course raises a question for me (since I grew up in Philly) if this was only a Philly/South Jersey phenomena or if this is the way school closings were done in other places? So question for the group: how did you get snow closing information for your school as a kid?
I still remember anytime snow was in the forecast waking up early and putting my radio on KYW1060 to hear school closing announcements. In grade school I went to public school so we had no number, they would simply announce "All Philadelphia Public and Parochial Schools are Closed" (or open). It was always a joint decision for all the public and Catholic schools within the city limits. I did sort of envy the other schools in the area that had an assigned number that they listened for. I finally got one in high school because I went to a private HS outside the city. My number was 360; so you'd wait as the announcer called each number of the schools that were closed. If he skipped your number you were out of luck - get to school. If you heard it, pure joy! Nothing was better than hearing the newscaster call your number. Nothing worse than them skipping over it ("the  following schools are closed, 358, 359, 361,362" - "wait he didn't call 360? How can that be!") Listening to them rattle off numbers for 10 minutes was like playing the lottery as a kid. You hoped your number "hit" and you won a free day off school. I suspected with the Internet and text messaging the days of school "closing numbers" on the radio were soon to be over. But I think a lot of kids will be missing out on a really fun ritual of listening intently through those numbers praying theirs didn't get skipped over. I know I lived for it in the winter.

They use to blow the volunteer fire departments fire whistle at a certain time in my town. Once you heard that it was WOOOOO !!!!! WHOOOOO !!!! No school it's a snow day !

SNOWMAN Sighting!!!

There's a warrant out for your arrest on OTI buddy. Not sure if you're aware but I'd lay low and not give out your current location.

I'm not sure how much I can help you, my position as OTI director of the Treasury is tenuous at best, your position as Director of Security is under serious scrutiny. Math is now the richest man on the Island and I believe you at the very least owe him an apology. I'm only the messenger as well as:

Yes, CP, I noticed in the main post office in OTI a front and side view picture of SNOWMAN with a heading "wanted by CIAOTI for questioning in Math 23x7 caper.Apparently, this is what is keeping SNOWMAN off the Island at the present time.

I will have to go down to the records department to see what the status of Billg is as far as visa or citizenship. His contributions here,I believe, will grant him both but I guess it behooves us now to consult with Math 23x7 in this matter as he is the wealthiest citizen now on OTI, and henceforth carries incredible influence in OTI politics. That is, as long as the commodities market keeps a healthy price on bannanas and coconuts.you know how fickle those markets can be and if BY CHANCE, those markets should crash and lose 90% of their value......well, then Math will become just another beachcomber on OTI picking up conch shells to sell to tourists.

I was sent here on a diplomatic mission, but I have so come to love the Coconut Room that I hereby formally request and apply for citizenship. Or in lieu of citizenship at the very least refugee status from the mainland as temperatures soar toward the 60s today.
