UHGGGG I WANT THIS AGAIN!!!!!! My Frankzilla storm. Well, 2" shy of a Frankzilla
Re: December 26-27, 2010 Boxing Day Blizzard
Well, you would have waited 9 years from the Feb 1969 snowstorm of 19 inches to the Feb 1978 snowstorm. Then waited 5 years from the Feb 1978 to Feb 1983.Then 13 years until the Jan 1996 snowstorm......My point is something like Boxing Day is a rare event around these parts, not so much the last 15 years but in the snow drought 70's, 80's and 90,s....Rare.
This December will be 5 years from Boxing Day so maybe this winter to come will be the charm.Only thing, Frank, get back to Cranford if one is coming.Don't think Hackettstown did very well on Boxing Day, all big snowstorms S and E these recent years.

What bothers me about this storm is people try and disclaim the higher totals for this storm....many people saw 30+, especially down here and up by union county. People say 96 was better but I wasn't alive to judge lol

My Sister in Ocean Grove near you had 36 inches and it took three days to get to their street with front end loaders to clear it out.You are absolutely right on that 30+ inches down the shore Boxing Day.

Juno really teased NYC. When I heard " CRIPPLING HISTORIC BLIZZARD ON THE WAY " I was jumping for joy. I thought this storm was going to be Franzilla square. The Boxing Day Blizzard was the best snowstorm that I ever witnessed. 25 inches here with a lot of cars stuck in my area. Every storm was closed and the city was in a standstill. I remember when everyone was in shock when the models lost the storm and especially when they brought it back. My friend from another board ( Frank knows who I am talking about ) called me with excitement on Christmas Eve morning stating that the GFS brought back the storm. He then called me saying that HPC threw it out lol. I knew something special was happening when the Euro ensembles were way west of the Euro op at 12z. The 0z Euro run on christmas morning was the best present ever. What a great storm.

Haha Anthony, we all lost our minds when models brought the storm back. I literally think some people were crying for joy.

Josh called me a million times that morning because he couldn't believe his eyes. I was working that morning so I wasn't able to see the models. I ran home from CVS after getting out early from work. I spent my whole Christmas Eve back and forth from the computer to the table lol. I will never forget what Janice Huff forecasted. She was forecasting flurries even after the models shifted west . Once DT cancelled the storm, it came right back lol. I remember the Euro and GFS had this storm a week in advance.

Yep, saw a lot of 1 to 3 inch "we'll get brushed" forecasts a few days before. One of the best snowstorm/blizzards I have ever seen.Weren't there even OTS forecasts in that time frame? The models must have danced around to have the storm a week in advance and then lose it so badly a few days before.Go figure.......

Re: December 26-27, 2010 Boxing Day Blizzard
I was in VT for that xmas holiday, and did not even realize we had a snowstorm ( wasn't looking at models like I do now) so I was none the wiser until I saw the forecast on TV out of nowhere a blizzard on xmas eve news for the next day. I was like holy cow we gotta cut our trip short and leave really early tomorrow. Our drive home was cool, as we got closer and closer to NYC the snow slowly started to come heavier and heavier with each mile and by the time we got to the merrit forget it I witnessed two pretty big crashes and we got home with already like 4-5 on the ground. It was a awesome snowstorm, wish I had been around with you guys back then.

It was around this time five years ago that I first learned that I could get a possible significant snowstorm two days later. It turned out to be a historic snowstorm!

Re: December 26-27, 2010 Boxing Day Blizzard
I remember this storm for 2 things.
1) My brother had a wedding in queens somewhere and I told him about the storm. I told him not to go because he would have trouble getting home that night. But he went and told me to call him when it gets bad outside. He lives in eastern Nassau county so it would be a long drive. The wedding started at 6 and at 9, i called him and told him I just saw on the news cop cars getting Stuck on the Meadowbrook parkway and there was already 6 inches on the ground. He told people at the table he was leaving and they all got up to leave. Then the next table got up to leave. And so on and so on. Apparently people left in droves after i called my brother. Poor newlyweds lost most of their party because of me.
2) The next day My father and I went out to shovel. There was over 2 feet in Merrick, Long island. We shoveled for 10 minutes then my father lit a cigarette and said, F this...we'll pay someone to do this. This man would not pay for water in a desert yet he gave up on this snow after 10 minutes. That's how I knew it was a storm for the ages.
P.S. Storm of 2016 was still the best for me. But this was 2nd. 1996 was third.

Re: December 26-27, 2010 Boxing Day Blizzard
Six years ago tonight, we had blizzard conditions. Here was Upton's 36 hour text forecast for Manhattan hours before the snow began:
NYZ072-262130-
NEW YORK (MANHATTAN)-
354 AM EST SUN DEC 26 2010
...BLIZZARD WARNING IN EFFECT UNTIL 6 PM EST MONDAY...
.TODAY...SNOW LIKELY THIS MORNING...THEN SNOW WITH A CHANCE OF
THUNDERSTORMS THIS AFTERNOON. BLOWING SNOW THIS AFTERNOON. SNOW MAY
BE HEAVY AT TIMES THIS AFTERNOON WITH VISIBILITY ONE QUARTER MILE OR
LESS AT TIMES. SNOW ACCUMULATION OF 3 TO 5 INCHES. BLUSTERY. NEAR
STEADY TEMPERATURE AROUND 30. NORTHEAST WINDS 15 TO 20 MPH. GUSTS UP
TO 35 MPH THIS AFTERNOON. CHANCE OF SNOW NEAR 100 PERCENT.
.TONIGHT...SNOW WITH A CHANCE OF THUNDERSTORMS IN THE EVENING...THEN
SNOW AFTER MIDNIGHT. BLOWING SNOW. SNOW MAY BE HEAVY AT TIMES IN THE
EVENING WITH VISIBILITY ONE QUARTER MILE OR LESS AT TIMES. TOTAL
SNOW ACCUMULATION OF 10 TO 14 INCHES. WINDY WITH LOWS IN THE LOWER
20S. NORTH WINDS 20 TO 25 MPH WITH GUSTS UP TO 45 MPH. CHANCE OF
SNOW NEAR 100 PERCENT.
.MONDAY...MOSTLY CLOUDY. LIGHT SNOW LIKELY...MAINLY IN THE MORNING.
AREAS OF BLOWING SNOW. LITTLE OR NO ADDITIONAL SNOW ACCUMULATION.
WINDY WITH HIGHS IN THE LOWER 30S. NORTHWEST WINDS 20 TO 25 MPH.
GUSTS UP TO 45 MPH IN THE MORNING. CHANCE OF SNOW 70 PERCENT.
Interesting that this basically had CPK at 13-19" of snow and it got 20", perhaps more than that as CP may say.
As I have mentioned before, 36 hours before the snow began, I had no indication that there would be any snow from this. I found out about the possibility of snow at 11 PM on 12/24 and the rest was history.

Seven years since this event. Many street-parked vehicles were partially buried by the snow. Some blocks were not shoveled for days, almost like the December 1947 snowstorm exactly 63 years earlier.

Sorry, not in my book Frank. Blizzard of 96 is the greatest. I was an avid watcher of the weather channel at the time. I'll never forget on that early Sunday morning of January 7th. The TV flashed a red scroll of 2-3 feet of snow was expected! I ended up with 30 inches. There was a jackpot zone just to the south of me of 3 feet!Frank_Wx wrote:Best. Storm. Ever.
