So weird, I'm 120 miles southeast and I keep dropping all night and have been sleet almost the whole time.
29.8 still with moderate to heavy sleet mixed with a little freezing rain.

Must be a warm nose somewhere here. Very frustrating.

Re: January 22nd-24th Nor'easter Observations & Discussions
I will give you the rain is impressive, checked large area radar, doesn't look like I will be out of the heavy rain anytime soon keeps feeding in from the ocean. There is still a wind advisory for gusts to 50mph, the rain as heavy as it is if we get gusts to 50mph, could still cause quite a bit of trouble. I understand Frank and yes jersey shore did verify on the winds, i already gave kudos what else do you want nutella?! LOL, sorry not going to the store in this.

No no no. I don't want kudos. Just want to make sure people understand the reality of this situation. IMO, there is no bust for the aforementioned reasons. But yes, I want nutella. Thank you.

Just took the first measurement of the night.
1.8 inches of pure sleet and still coming down. That stuff hurts too.
Shoveling tomorrow is gonna be back braking.
29.8 and still coming down moderate to heavy.

My line of work I need to show up regardless of weather but that is fine with me I enjoy challenging driving. However my wife is a teacher and I worry about her on the Taconic especially being pregnant. Does anyone know conditions in Yorktown Height because Ill be nervous with her driving based on condition here.

Frank_Wx wrote:I'm confused. Gusts reached 60mph today along the JS and 40 to 50mph almost everywhere else. Over 2 inches of rain will fall. Areas supposed to see sleet accumulation are getting it as we speak. And as I type this I still hear howling winds outside. Not one single element of this storm busted. Not one.
LGA gusted to 40s but thats flat and right on the water, perfectly set up to funnel a ENE wind. Go a mile away those winds were not realized with any consistency. Not howling winds here. That's where the disapointment is coming from. I wouldn't call it a bust though, but didn't fulfill all its potential for many. I think this is a Jersey special. (Plus those N&W enough to get sleet)

Damn, but still better than freezing rain.

Wow, you may approach 2 inches of sleet but likely 1.5
I measured 1.8 inches at 10:30 Frank. I'm probably nearing 2 inches now. Crazy.

Rain drops getting huge here and also mixing with an occasional sleet pellet. hopefully that means the changeover is near. I want off tomorrow lol

Sorry aiannone my experience with college is you don't get off because generally speaking the students live at the school so they can walk. Although nowadays the majority in your age group has more snowflakes so you never know.aiannone wrote:Rain drops getting huge here and also mixing with an occasional sleet pellet. hopefully that means the changeover is near. aionnone you are on a rain island. Also the mix line is further south then the radar suggests at least in southern Dutchess.

Agree completely. This storm underperformed in NYC for SURE. We've had no wind advisories in place in the past and saw more impressive gusts than we experienced today. Stinks. Oh well, we all agree this storm is a pain in the ass with the lack of cold air, so here's to a SNOWY February! ;-)

Re: January 22nd-24th Nor'easter Observations & Discussions
29.7 and 2.0 inches of sleet otg and counting.
I can look at this two ways. If this was all snow I'd probably have 8-10 inches already (my heart aches thinking about it) and if this was freezing rain I'd have power lines down all over the place and no electricity right now.
So is the glass half full or half empty?

cp I'm going to say half full. This beats rain any day. Yes snow is better but this is interesting. I hate power losses and we should be good I just checked trees and lines have no sag but no power can be fun since different then status quo.

I agree totally.
In order of precip choices.
1. Snow
2. Sleet
3. Rain
4. Freezing rain.
The whole event so far has been number 2 and it's all white outside. I can't complain except when I have to shovel this tomorrow.

Morally I agree. but as a weather enthusiast I have Freezing rain before rain. I also feel like it is, high wind, freezing rain never verifies. When it does it is devastating which makes it exciting. I never want anyone hurt but I like the change in pace.

Not me I hate the stuff, to much damage and no electricity I can do without.
Just took the midnight measurement and now going to bed.
2.3 inches of sleet, incredible, and coming down hard. Temp 29.7
A little nervous what the morning will bring.
