NYC as best I can tell has never had consecutive seasons with single digit snowfall. Anyone think that will be challenged this season? I say no way.

I would agree we have had no consecutive single digit snowfall seasons in NYC, but the late 90s had several winters of low double digit, well below average snow totals. Those were some painful years for snow lovers.

That was memorable. What a great snow year!!

I compare that winter to the 1986 Mets and Giant's Superbowls (1986-87 season because I was a sophomore in high school - pre baseball strike and sports still brewed heroes for a 15 year old kid). Unforgettable years.

Seems like the Grinch is going to rule this winter, sadly.

I was browsing through the forum and realized something. Each page of the official weather talk section has 30 threads. The tab at the bottom of the first page is currently the November 2019 general discussion thread, which was over a year ago!. During the active winters, there would be dozens of threads in just months taking up several pages. And there would be multiple threads on just one event, with hundreds of posts in one day on one thread! That is not to be lately. And given the +EPO that could develop within the next couple of weeks, that quiet trend could continue. Perhaps this time next year, the first page could have the September 2020 thread. Who knows?

With how things have gone, winters just suck anymore. I used to love winter and the multiple storms we'd have. Once it started, there was snow on the ground, especially in parking lots where they bulldozed it, until May or later. Now, we don't even get snow and if we do, it's gone in a couple days.

Lol Ray. I don’t recall specifically out dialing you per say in a forecast but I do remember the second half of Feb Into mid to late March of 2015 it was one SWFE after another involving LI, southern CT, RI region. It was that slam dunk 3-6”/4-8” event. At that time I was consistently beating Steve Dimartino. He refused to acknowledge the idea that the baroclinically driven enhancements to expected totals would win out. He was so stubborn in his forecast. Arctic frontal boundary frappes in the perfect position with weak LP riding along it and enhanced totals further East because of the temp gradient and the Atlantic moisture.  Here is the 500mb pattern from that time frame. It was beautiful. You can see my snow totals in my signature from that winter.

2014/15 was my last good meteorological winter. That year seemed most things broke right. Outside of a super March 2018 seems a struggle to make things break right since then.

Reaching for the towels with all this talk about warming through early January coming up 😂. Last two seasons, I threw them in early and it worked in my favor... purely coincidence. While it may sound like we throw the towel early sometimes.... it's all about terminology. When we start talking about "going through a certain period" that lasts weeks, we now have to look past that for hope, so it rushes winter by.

Agreed, I remember as a kid, even into my teen years, that it would always be cold when decorating for Christmas and onward. Now it's mid 60s in late November- early December while I decorate. Creates a real festive feel as I decorate in shorts.

Sun has sent a flare our direction
From Grand Solar Minimum

C7-class solar flare from sunspot AR2790 (Dec. 7th). UV radiation from the flare caused a minor shortwave radio blackout over South America. The blast may have hurled a CME toward Earth. If so tehre will be more affects to come.

Watch for volcanism/EQs & Polar weather changes

Affected area

I just saw around 7:40pm what looked like a meteor rocketing across the sky. It was amazing.

My husband and I were thinking of going to Iceland for the Northern Lights this year as well. One day, when there’s no pandemic. Sigh.
