Temp dropped back to 26 from 27.1 and it looks like some decent radar returns are moving into the area. Hopefully I see something of significance.

The column has crashed. Back to snow here. Jman you can see the 850s crashing again. Once the 850 mb low moves out a little I'd expect a flip back to snow. how much precip is left in the tank is the question.

yeah that's my concern that there won't be much left. If so I'll be around 6 inches which would be a big bust but still a ok storm.heehaw453 wrote:The column has crashed. Back to snow here. based on radar and my surface temps I think i can squeak out at least 2" more. the coastal plain right now has near or slightly above freezing temps that will make it more difficult to accumulate.

Well let's see tomorrow morning how that works out Mikey, because I ended up with 20.8 inches from Stella. I'm sitting at 7.4 inches right now, although I did just notice the snow has picked up in intensity some.
You hear any measurements from the Park yet?
NWS totals:
EWR: 5.5"
JFK: 3.8"
LGA: 5.6"
CPK: 6.5"
Interesting that CPK is the high-end outlier of the four for once. At any rate, from just one system in December, CPK exceeded the snow total of the entire 2019-20 season.
Here in Bellerose, I measured 4.8" about an hour ago. It figures that when I'm with my folks in Queens, my place in Albany is getting absolutely crushed and may exceed the 22" it got from the early-December snowstorm from last year.

Excellent high ratio snow growth right now. Coming down moderately with some heavier returns just over Allentown PA.

That sucks. I read some crazy stat that when CPK receives more than 5" in December that it was over 30" for season some 90% of the time? I'm screwing this up I'm sure, but does it ring a bell?

9.0 inches even at 2AM and calling it a night.
Snowing at a better clip now and better snow growth but not great, yet.
Hoping to exceed 12 inches by morning. Good luck to all.

Hey CP, burning the midnight oil,LOL. Fell asleep at 10PM but succumbed to the "have to check the snow" bug and woke up 10 minutes ago.Glad to see 9 around here. Was really coming down heavy at 10 pm, looks moderate now.Looks like that central PA to upstate NY is getting the big band now.Heading back to bed, hopefully we get that 12.Radar seems to support another 3 or 4 hours of steady snow.Nighty night all.

They measured 6.5 inches.
No that stat isn't anywhere near 90%.
Historically the December average in NYC is 5 inches, for the 152 years of record keeping it's 5.4. There have been 83 Decembers with 5 or more inches of snow and 51 of those times have had 30 or more inches of snow. So 61.4% of the time it does bring on a winter of over 30 inches which is historically near their average.

Dry slot killed us Doc, plus the silent killer the dreaded warm nose even changed us to graupel with some sleet for a time even though it was 19 degrees.
If we still make our foot by morning though no complaints. Talk to you tomorrow buddy.

3 am and it looks like about 14 inches. Not snowing right now. Wind seems to be on vacation. So here it did catch up to give me some decent snow. The moral of the story: go to bed early and one misses all the fun

Re: 12/16-12/17 Godzilla: Final Snow Map & Obsevations
It is amazing we got this much snow for the 500 mb low passing to our NW. it was more of an ice mixture with the snow. I am in Caldwell, NJ. If the upper level system was any stronger with a true cutting off low at 500 mb to our NW, we would have gotten an initial burst of snow, then to sleet and freezing rain, or more likely rain. Owe the snow we got from a weaker upper system!!

25* with some light snow here as morning breaks. Not sure it’s heavy enough to add to the totals but at least there are still some snowflakes coming down.

I was wiped out yesterday and unfortunately slept through most of the storm. I heard a lot of sleet on the windows somewhere around 9 or 10 pm last night.
7.5 inches on my deck this morning, not currently doing anything out there.

I haven't been outside to measure yet, but something must have happened while I was sleeping because the NWS estimated totals are now higher than any forecast I saw before I went to bed last night.

Re: 12/16-12/17 Godzilla: Final Snow Map & Obsevations
One thing that I’ve learned is people’s attention is always drawn to the high-end number of a snow forecast range and they tend to fixate on it (can’t tell you how many times I’ve told a friend or co-worker we’re getting 6-10” and after we get 6” they say ‘you said we were gonna get 10”!’)
Looking at Frank’s map, I think most people are at or very close to at least the low-ends. Maybe the 6-10 could have extended further into NW NJ where it dry slotted and sleeted - but even there I was forecast at 8-12 and got around 7”, so I call that close enough. On the whole though, I think the low-end forecasts for this storm ended up being pretty close to on-target for most people.
