Total whiteout here wind driven heavy snow can't ask for better than this eyeballing it very tough to measure 5 to 6in so far if these bands keep rotating in I should see double digits here

Godzilla mode!! Blizzard warnings expanded into eastern LI and southern CT, they should put up here this is a blizzard, a bunch of full garbage bags just went flying down the street.

It's called the NY Mesonet and it's a bunch of reporting stations, similar to ASOS, that are distributed across the state to increase the number of observations that can be fed into weather models (if they so choose at some point), but also to give a more representative depiction of what's going on across the state so DOTs and such can act accordingly. Kinda cool, but also kinda dumb, because as far as I know no other state is doing it and the observations, even if injected into modeling (aside from a specialized mesoscale model like the HRRR specifically for NY that could be used during an event) would not make a difference in a model's output.

Hey everyone, new member here
I'm from Great Neck, long island. The snow has been coming down pretty hard in my area, near if not whiteout conditions. The bands have been killer, i would say ive gotten 2-3 inches in the past 1:15. Excited to see how this one unfolds...

Relentless snow in brooklyn. There's been a heavy band sitting over NYC for quite some time that doesn't look like it's moving out very soon. I can barely see the building across the street - I'm on the 5th floor.

Yup, from Ocean Cty., NJ right through NYC, Bridgeport, and Hartford are at the apex of that band. Look for local maxima in totals there as the band has now reached its furthest westward extent and begins to pivot around the backside of the low. Expect several hours of the snowfall rates that you are seeing now if you are in those regions.

Re: January 4th Mothrazilla: Final Call & Observations
22* with steady moderate snow here. I won’t give an official measurement because the drifting is making that impossible, but I think we’re on target for Frank’s 3-6” call. The wind though is whipping good here. Whole house is rattling.

I haven't gone out side, but it looks like 12-15" here. I haven't seen rates like this even in BDB....If this band does not move then lol

Actually, CP, it was him in that Godzilla suit. You could see the zipper in the back in the classic Godzilla vs Rodan movie.

Attached is the view from my front yard (roads had been cleared 45 minutes before now they are covered) and my backyard with a table to show rough accumulation amounts. Syosnow (my old teacher) was right about 10-16 for Long Island maybe...

Re: January 4th Mothrazilla: Final Call & Observations
Visibility is dropping and its absolutely blitzing, so awesome I am very happy. NWS is wrong to not have blizzard warnings here but thats on them. I would say 6 or so here but super hard to tell. Going out soon, my daughter is dying to go out in her first blizzard bet you she lasts 2 seconds before running inside lol
