Looks like the dry slot is going to make it here in time for us not to go to a soaking rain. That will help higher totals after the 2nd part comes through tonight

Re: Archived: 2/13/14 Godzilla Storm
Hello to all! Long time lurker, followed over from lurking at the ABC site. Currently a resident of Staten Island (Eltingville), working in Midtown. Have a bit of a weather obsession, although no idea how to read the maps and various other tools you use to track it.
Snowing hard here in the city, hearing conditions in S.I. are awful. People here are saying this will all be rain by noon, so no one is worried at all. Once the rain comes, will Staten Island and the City stay rain, or are we in for the snow bands that have yet to come?
Thank you! Kelly

Sleet started here at around 8:30am, then sleet coming down a bit heavier with some snow mixing in for a few minutes, and now at 8:55am it appears to be all snow again, on top of around 6-8 inches already on the ground.

Re: Archived: 2/13/14 Godzilla Storm
Very very dynamic storm, winds are veering and precipitation keeps shifting, not really sleet but more like half-melted snow crystals that re-froze, to me evident of a narrow warm layer in the mid levels, about half and half this and snow right now, was almost 100% of this pseudo-sleet earlier now it's going towards more snow. Watching Philly news and they're back to snow. There's a battle going on folks, tighten your seatbelt.

Use the lull to shovel/snowblow out, that's what I'm doing, take it to your advantage.

Hope that GLC just noses this a bit east to get colder air in here.
Good news about Philly.
I think I read years ago what you describe being called snow pellets.

It's not graupel, I saw that with the 1/26 storm and it was opaque, this stuff is similar but it's clear and not perfectly round. Never seen it before. DEF not sleet though.

Re: Archived: 2/13/14 Godzilla Storm
NJ your right its more ice crystals mixed in with snow and apparently right over me is a pocket of "sleet" since the main sleet line hasn't pushed passed the south shore

No I'm still convinced we see a changeover and a lull, like I said use it to your advantage, dig out before round 2, but it is colder than I anticipated.
