Re: Weather Statistics Thread
Since there are 365+1 days in the year (+1 being for leap years), there are 365+1 record highs and 365+1 record lows for each day in the year. Entering today, the lowest record high temperature during the year belonged to February 7th at 54* in 1938. That's right, from 1869 to 2019 every date during the year had a high temperature at or above 55 degrees at one point....except 2/7. That changed today when it hit a high of 56*, making it a new record high.
Even with the new record, February 7th still has the lowest record high temperature. The second lowest, at 58*, is for two dates: December 19th and January 16th.

Re: Weather Statistics Thread
I've touched on this subject quite a bit the last two years, but now that we're down to the last three weeks I thought it would be a good time to review where NYC, Central Park specifically, stands in the quest for a 30 inch snowfall average when the new 30 year averages are calculated next month.
For those not aware how it works the 30 year snowfall averages will be calculated for the period from January 1991 through December 2020. In short this will mean say goodbye to the 1980's from the averages, which hold the record as the least snowiest decade recorded.
Assuming NOAA calculates the averages for each month by rounding up or down to the nearest tenth of an inch, the months who have their 30 years completed look as follows:
October..........0.1
November.....0.5
December.....4.9 (29 year avg) final number to be determined
January.........8.7
February......10.1
March............5.0
April..............0.4
May..................T
The 30 year average calculated now would be 29.7 inches.
To get December to a 5.2 average, or in this case 5.15 which should round up to 5.2, Central Park will need to record 11.3 inches of snow this December, which is what will be needed to get the 30 year average to 30.0 inches. Currently the December 1991 -2020 period averages 4.773 inches which would round to 4.8 and would make the 30 year average 29.6 inches if no snow falls this December.
Here's to hoping that if Wednesday is indeed a surprise heavy snowfall for the city, the Conservancy? doesn't measure 11.2 inches and leave us hanging for the rest of the month.
Any interested parties please check the above numbers.
And we wait for the final returns.

You just know 12 inches will fall Wednesday and the zookeeper measures 11. It is 2020 after all

Yes, just enough to leave CP's 30 year average at 29.999999999999999999999874537 inches. NOT 30!

You both know it.
Central Park will measure 11.2 inches as a total somehow this month, even if their lucky enough to have two feet fall.

These are the top 20 storms in NYC, with the storms of the 2000's highlighted in red. Amazing how they have filled the top ten in the last 20 years.
To get on the list this storm would have to exceed 15.2 inches in Central Park. I'd love to see it happen but doubting it does. More realistic is the 11.3 inches I keep touting so the 30 year average gets to 30 inches for the Jan 1991 to Dec 2020 calculations to come out next month. It would be nice to get both but I'll take the 11.3 and hope for the top 20 after that. Of course the way they measure in the Park we may not know final totals until Friday night, after settling and compression takes its toll.

Re: Weather Statistics Thread
6.5 inches in Central park as of midnight.
Will see how much falls on the 17th but this leaves the city now 4.8 inches short of getting Decembers 30 year average to 5.2 which will then bring the 30 year average to 30 inches.
The average for December now stands at 5.0 inches, 4.99 to be exact, which if no more snow fell this month would put the 30 year average at 29.8
This will make it an interesting last 2 weeks.

Re: Weather Statistics Thread
Looking at the radar looks like there was some snow overnight and even this morning in CPK so the final total *should* logically be slightly higher than that 6.5” but given their history they may just go to bed and forget to measure again.

Re: Weather Statistics Thread
It does appear that Central Park did officially record 10 inches of snow from this storm. A couple of things of note about that.
This becomes the 66th storm since 1870 of 10 inches or more in NYC and the 13th in December. The breakdown by months as seen below.

1…....November
13…..December
16…..January
25…..February

NYC now needs an additional 1.3 inches of snow this December to get the December 30 year average from 5.1 to 5.2 which will then get to a 30.0 inch average when the next averages are calculated next month for 1991-2020. What seemed a lock two and a half years ago is now going down to the final two weeks.

Re: Weather Statistics Thread
I did some digging on the double digit snowfall for CPK in December and found some interesting facts.
1. There was a period of over 30 years where CPK didn't record double digit snowfall in December 1964-1994.
2. I found 28 season where CPK recorded double digit snowfall in December. 24/28 recorded > 30" ~ 86%
3. Those that didn't have > 30" were very close with the exception of 1912.
4. There have been no such occurrences where double digit snowfall occurred in December and seasonal snowfall < 30" since 1926.
5. What does this mean? Who knows, but I like starting off well...

Nice stats Heehaw. I posted this in the other thread this morning. Slightly different than yours.
There have been 29 Decembers with 10 or more inches of snow in NYC
24 of those winters have then had 30 or more inches for the season or 82.8%
17 of the 29 have had 40 or more inches of snow for the season or 58.6%
9 of the 29 have had 50 or more inches of snow or the season or 31.0%

Doc I just came in from snow blowing and checked.
Yes the 1:00pm update in Central Park was 10.5 inches. The city now needs 0.8 inches by the end of the month to reach the 30 inch average when the new 30 year averages are calculated next month.
Amazing when it looked like that was a lock 2 and half years ago and it's coming right down to the wire.

Based on the long range forecasting for this year coupled with the fact that double digit December snowfall only occurs about 20% of the time in CPK I thought this had not a snowball chance in hell. Amazing.

Re: Weather Statistics Thread
I posted this morning in another thread but was meant for the weather stats thread:
Including this December that just recorded 10.5 inches of snow in NYC, with hopefully more to come this month, this becomes the 29th December to record 10 or more inches of snow in Central Park.
There have been 28 full seasons in NYC with 10 or more inches of snow in December and here's how they fared.
24 of those winters have then had 30 or more inches for the season or 85.7%
17 of the 28 have had 40 or more inches of snow for the season or 60.7%
9 of the 28 have had 50 or more inches of snow for the season or 32.1%
4 of the 28 have had 60 or more inches of snow for the season or 14.2%
1 of the 28 have had 70 or more inches of snow for the season or 3.6%

The most recent storm at 10.5 inches didn't even make the Top 50 list in NYC, it comes in at 54th, but it did become the 16th storm of 10 inches or more since 2000 and the 66th since 1869 when records have officially been kept.

True Doc, plus that being a NYC list we've had quite a few more here in the HV since the 2000's than 16.
I'll have to go through my records at some point and check. There's just been so many on the last 20 years you begin to lose track. I remember checking a couple of years back and it was 25 since 2000, we've added a few including yesterdays since then.

Hey Cp to piggy back these great stats Joe D'Aleo posted this on the Weather Bell site today. Summed up: the precedent is for the NE to have anywhere from 2-5 total NESIS rated storms this year based off these stats.
"I wondered whether historically major December storm was an omen for the winter. This was certainly a major event.
Last Thursday's storm had an amazing band of very heavy snow in the arctic air.
Observers in cities and towns in PA, NY and New England:
19 locations reported over 40 inches
126 locations reported over 30 inches
219 reported over 24 inches
456 reported over 12 inches.
Does a December major event historically speaking provide a preview of what is to follow?
I looked at December years with a NESIS event and totaled the number for the winter. The years starting in 1957 ended with 2 to 5 major events. 3 years had 5 , 3 years had 4, 4 years had 4, 2 years had 2. The average was 3.6."

It looks like this may have what it takes to crack the top 20 list in NYC of top storms of all time. They need 15.3 inches to do it. A lot of the guidance seems to give them a decent shot.
