Re: Weather Statistics Thread
It looks like this may have what it takes to crack the top 20 list in NYC of top storms of all time. They need 15.3 inches to do it. A lot of the guidance seems to give them a decent shot.

I bet it cracks the top ten. I think when all is said and done it has at least another 5" in it for the city.

Bob I was at 10.5 inches when I measured at 1:30.
I finally got into the real heavy stuff right after I measured. It's easily coming down at 2.5-3 inches per hour right now. Plus it's 20 degrees here so ratios have saved the day so far. Will be going to the snowboard again at 3:00PM

A heads up. This isn’t a thread for recording individual snow totals. We will be making one for that today when the storm is over for all. Thanks.

Re: Weather Statistics Thread
The Jan 31-Feb 3 storm, now with 17.4 inches in Central Park as of 7 am this morning, now ties it for number 16 all time in NYC. It appears it will fall 0.8 inches short of cracking the top 10. In reality it probably did, but after the 16.8 inch report at midnight Feb1 they have only reported 0.6 inches in the last 32 hours? That's probably not correct and all anyone has to do is look at the observations from the last 32 hours to verify. It was probably closer to 2 inches since then at least. WTS the Consevancy still does a much better job than the zookeeper ever did. Oh those horrible under counts from years past. The horror, The horror.

So much incorrect reporting on this storm. TWC one of the worst culprits kept repeating the mantra this is a top 10 storm all time in NYC, which of course leads to the question why do I bother watching TWC. As the above plainly proves, at least record keeping wise it is not. I won't even bother with all of the other incorrect things I heard. Does anyone check facts before reporting anymore?
One shot at Boston. Their mayor declared a state of emergency and closed all schools when they were expecting 3-5 inches of snow? You're kidding me right? I believe their final tally was 1.2 inches at midnight last night as most of the storm there it just rained.

Re: Weather Statistics Thread
Two thoughts:
1. I guess while they may have under-counted this storm thereby possibly keeping it from the top 10, if we assume that some of the ones ahead of it on the list were egregiously under-counted by the zookeeper it may all even out anyway.
2. The Boston thing is funny. Can't tell how many times they oversell how a storm is going to affect Boston. There was one moment Monday morning when NNJ and NYC were experiencing near "whiteout" conditions and TWC was showing a camera in Boston where it was doing next to nothing and talking about how the snow was soon to arrive there. Or rain, as it turned out.

Re: Weather Statistics Thread
I figured we should preserve this for future reference. This map actually doesn't do the whole storm justice. It has a lot of Westchester in the 12-18 area when almost all trained spotters recorded 18-23 inches in Westchester. Plus this ends at 7Am Tuesday the 2nd when several inches were recorded after this in some locations and most spotter updates were from the day before.
The two darkest shades of red are 18-30 inches which is a pretty large area for one storm. This also doesn't show any 30+ area which clearly there was.
If someone has a better map or something updated on the 3rd or 4th please feel free to post it.

Does anyone know what the new 30 year snowfall average is for Somerville or Bridgewater? I've been trying to find this, and I gave up, lol. I'm thinking somewhere around 32"? Thanks a lot!

For NYC it is 30 inches (1991-2020) or will be when they finally make them public. Unless there is a reporting station near Bridgewater you'll have to find stations close to you and guesstimate as best you can. I would think Bridgewater would not vary more than a couple of inches for the average either way from the Central Park average.

Great work in here CP.
I'm at 33.5" so far this year and that's about .5 below my "old" average as per Tom Stovalo's map that he has comprised. Tom is Isotherm here.
So the new average is up and mine is too but to what I have no idea 38"? 36"?

I would agree with CP that Bridgewater/Somerville on average is going to be close the Central Park average. Having lived in that area I might add a couple inches to the NYC average because there is no heat island or coastal proximity issues there and it is on a slightly more NW plane than the city (in terms of how storms track SW to NE or S to N often). But that would just be a guesstimate. The one source who might have that data would be the Rutgers climate center because they may actually calculate averages for individual reporting stations in NJ.

With today's storm cpk will be above Ave snowfall for winter20/21 with about 33". I will be close to 40" and most of the tri state area + PA will be above normal. Now with the upcoming pattern looking so good can this winter become truly epic and one to remember? I believe we would have to get at least 50" in the park. I believe that there is a good chance that happens.

50 inch seasons in NYC have not been that hard to come by since the 2010's Al. Four of the last 11 winters have been above 50 inches in the city. With the current tally at 32.5 inches making it five winters out of the last 12 certainly seems in play.

And Al Gore said in 2000, then again in 2006 my kids would never see snow again! But NYC as CP points out has had four 50inch winters out of last 10.
I sit at 42.5" for the year so far. What a way to start the 2020 decade.

Below are the Final tallys from the last 3 storms from Uptons observation areas which includes, NYC, LI, NNJ, SCT and the LHV.
You can take a lot of these totals with a grain of salt. If it's not from a trained spotter it's 50-50 it's incorrect. Even some of the the totals from trained spotters are not final totals from the storm. You have to look at the last observation and time to see that many totals posted, even by trained spotters are not the actual storm final totals.
The perfect example is the Feb1-3 storm. Many storm totals on the NOAA final sheet show the last observations from the second and a probably half from the first. Many places had several inches, and some places double digit amounts of snow after these last observations. They are not a true reflection of the final totals from the storm.
I wish they would get a little better at this so we could see better distribution maps at the end of storms.
Final Storm Totals Feb 9, 2021 Event - Winner Orange County
Final Storm Totals Feb 7, 2021 Event- Winner Bergen county by a hair over Suffolk
Final Storm Totals Jan 31-Feb 2 Event- Winner Passaic County

CP so true what pisses me of is I send in reports and sometime they post and many they do not. Guess I should take the Trained Spotter course and they give some validation to my reports!!
For instance I reported to NWS on the big storm 2x - one published at 6AM, reported 2x on Sunday - NADA nothing posted, and yesterday nothing so I'll keep at it but why have this reporting to Help as they say them out with observation when they are not going to take teh information and post it?
You are going to have many more of these storm report posts over the next two weeks my friend!

4.4 inches in Central Park as of 7:00 PM on 2/19 which should be their final total.
25.6 inches for February now which breaks into the top ten for February at number 8
38.2 inches for the season or 8.2 inches above their full seasonal normal.
Will update again tomorrow after their midnight report.

Re: Weather Statistics Thread
Final storm totals for Feb 18-19 event. Amazing for such a long duration and how it affected at different times all the different areas how uniform the totals ended up. As always you have to look at what time and date the measurements are from. In Monroe NY which is the closest trained spotter to me, they measured 4.0 inches at 8:30 yesterday morning. It snowed continuously from then until about 7 last night so the real measurement would probably be abut 6 inches. I was pretty conservative with my total and logged 4.8 inches for the entire event.

I sent them my totals for EVERY storm and silence me. No verification, nada don't post my totals.
