Looks like maybe an inch on the ground here and, not quite the dry slot, but not snowing much. I really don't know how West Orange is going to reach a foot of snow as predicted.

Looks like the filling in over the jersey shore is moving northeast towards NYC and LI

Re: 12/16-12/17 Godzilla: Final Snow Map & Obsevations
Two areas of interest on the radar now. One is an area of heavy bands/cells over South Jersey and Delaware Bay moving north. Those could pack a punch if they continue north through NJ. The second is that area of heavy bands over Northern VA moving northeast. If that swings east at bit as the storm pulls out, that could also produce some heavy precip later tonight. Those seem to be out best hopes for additional accumulation as the evening progresses.

Winds howling here with light snow.
Ditto Zoos measurement.
Though my temp is 23* I don't have the tenth of a degree on my system.

Re: 12/16-12/17 Godzilla: Final Snow Map & Obsevations
I wouldn’t count on that stuff coming through Maryland and Virginia to fall as snow. It’s being forced through a combination of 850 frontogeneis, and 700 and 500 intensification of our storm. So while 850 will feature cold advection behind it as that pulls east, you will see your warm tongue transition from the 850-800 level to the 800-750 level, and therefore result in more mixed precipitation types than anything, in my opinion. And, that’s if it even makes here; it may end up rotating cyclonically around as it feeds into that main band further north and becomes better oriented within the strengthening deformation zone.

Re: 12/16-12/17 Godzilla: Final Snow Map & Obsevations
As for the stuff currently obliterating me, that’s a similar story, though being forced by lower level (925/850) advection. So as that pulls north along the coast and into LI, that should allow the warm surge to progress along with it and transition from snow to a mix. Again, my opinion.

Back into a mix of sleet and snow here. Not has heavy as earlier, but the dry slot seems to be passing. The wind has kicked up as well.

Need to watch this in the morning. Shown on all guidance. Area of very heavy snow along the coast. There is still dry slotting over those stuck between the coast and the mega frontogenic band across NY

Too early to call bust just yet. It's hard to get a read on this one! Radar looks different every 20 minutes with new convective bands popping up and dry spots trying to fill in.

I think that’s what has developed now over coastal NJ, Frank.

Re: 12/16-12/17 Godzilla: Final Snow Map & Obsevations
Frank, some of the short range models (HRRR) and "futurecast" type models seem to show the precip largely filling in and continuing overnight. The radar doesn't really support that right now, but - as you point out - can change/fill in. Do you have a sense if they are onto something, or are just out to lunch?Frank_Wx wrote:Too early to call bust just yet. It's hard to get a read on this one! As an aside, I don't really care if this is a technical "bust" right now. I have about 6" or so here and it blitzed snow for several hours this afternoon and this evening. That is so far superior to anything from last winter that (and especially to get it a week before Christmas) I will not complain if I end up with only 6 or 7".
