Warmer air aloft. Snow melts into rain droplets at it passes through the warm air aloft, then as it re-enters the layer of freezing air closer to the surface it re-freezes into ice pellets - sleet.

Just got done shoveling a foot of snow in Stillwater NJ at 1190 ft elevation , I think 3 more inches have fallen, the wind is blowing real good and the snow is coming down sideways , currently 20 degrees , all good ! Thanks Frank for functioning and accomplishing at the highest possible level! You do a great job with this here weather club !

wow temp actually went down a degree currently 31 and it is pouring sideways rain right now... Mom reporting sleeting in Mt Arlington(NWNJ)...John Elliot said Thundsnow in the city....Where is Cantore???

Cantore was near Worcester. It's about 40 miles West of B.O.S.T.O.N.

HRRR gives me an additional 20 inches on top of the 12" I already have... I'll believe it when I see it. Most of that is probably actually sleet.

Hubby is in Forked River, and it's like a tropical storm! Pouring sideways! Getting a sleet storm now with some snow mixed in...

All -

Keep in mind the NWS counts sleet as snow. So if you see maps going up saying you have 7 inches of snow, and you're thinking "that is not right", it's because 3 inches of it could be sleet.

HOWEVER - I don't count sleet as snow in my maps. I think that's kinda dumb.

Between 10:30am-12:00pm you may be in 2-4"/hour rates

Update from Hopatcong:

20 Degrees and SLEETING?! How is this even possible up here at 1000 ft? I hope it's temporary...the windows sound like they want to explode.

Measured just over 12 inches of snow before sleet started. Did hear a thunderclap while shoveling.

Now it appears there is a battle going 50/50 sleet/snow. How is this even possible the radar shows the R/S line well south and the temp is 12 degrees below freezing?

Here is the r/s line. It advanced pretty far N&W. Once the low pulls away from the coast you should see it collapse S&E again, but could be another while.
