Warmfront not going to make it expect steady temperatures with Rain the rest of today and tonight. Old-timer this is what happens when the winds are on Shore in a torch patternoldtimer wrote:39* Down 2* Light rain I thought it was to get into the mid 40's at least Did warm front slow down?

It is 3:10 pm and temp here is about 35. I think it will get slippery about dinner time.

Re: January 2017 Observations & Discussions
The December observations thread and the e-mail about the conservancy thread both have 9,999 views.
Meaningless I know, but an odd coincidence nonetheless as they both have been at the number for at least a day. I'm sure when Syos reads this he will view both to bring them to 10,000.

The temperature at Central Park has been between 38 and 41 degrees for 2 days Plus. The departures for the last 3 days are + 4 + 7.5 + 6.5. Well under guidance. If the average person heard the word torch that was used in here and then experienced the weather the last 3 days, they would question our knowledge about weather.

Re: January 2017 Observations & Discussions
I don't know how people down your way are, but a lot of people around base the weather on how it feels rather than what the numbers say. It's not uncommon for them to get sick because the high of 20 was followed up by a high of 40 and they switch to wearing either a light jacket or no jacket at all.

My definition of torch is anything 10 degrees above normal.
Let's use this guidance.
MothraTorch +5 degrees above normal for several days.
GodzillaTorch +10
RoidzillaTorch +15
FrankzillaTorch +20
I realize the board will have to approve.
Basically right now we are stuck in a MothraTorch.

As I am looking out the window, there is plenty of sunshine. It could be another few days before I see the sun again...

Re: January 2017 Observations & Discussions
Yes Mike that's what a big Ridge can do with an easterly flow. We are now in the middle of the torch pattern still hasn't hit 50 degrees in Central Park even with sunshine today. We will not reach 50 tomorrow Monday or Tuesday with rain and an easterly wind. What's more depressing then cloudy cool weather is cold weather with sunshine which we will start to experience next Friday and BeyondMath23x7 wrote:As I am looking out the window, there is plenty of sunshine. Just drove through some areas of dense fog with low visibility especially around Burlington and Mercer counties. Just a murky evening.

36.6, 93%, 29.47 F
Partly cloudy
Hoping for a major shift east on this storm to cut down on the winds and increase chances for snow. The Jersey Shore does not need this.

Re: January 2017 Observations & Discussions
All three NYC reporting stations are 5.4 to 6.2 degrees above normal so far for January. All are also in the top 15 warmest Januarys ever.
It's been above normal for sooooo long now, I think we're forgetting what normal temperatures this time of year should be.
Normal is
38/27 in NYC
35/15 in the HV (Poughkeepsie)
38/23 in LI (Islip)
37/23 in Bridgeport
39/23 in Trenton

Re: January 2017 Observations & Discussions
The SCI (snow confidence index) has been updated on the home page. The 29th-30th has the potential to deliver a light snowfall event depending on whether or not the advertised trough can go from positively to neutral tilted. Unfortunately there is a "kicker" in the upper Midwest preventing the trough from amplifying and going neutral. But we'll see...
