Re: January 2017 Observations & Discussions
Frigid.
Update on Tuesday:
It looks like the precip wants to arrive later in the day. That gives temperatures a chance to warm up. I would not expect much in the way of wintry weather tomorrow except for those N&W of NYC. I think those areas can start as snow or mix before changing to rain.

Re: January 2017 Observations & Discussions
Going into today even after three days of decent cold January is still 0.8 - 2.0 degrees above normal in Central Park, LGA and JFK.
It's an early call but an easy one, January will be the 19th month in a row with above normal temperatures. I know it's not for this thread but I'm very curious and frustrated why this unprecedented streak of above normal temperatures for going on two years.
A strange question on a morning that it's currently -0.4 here.

bottomed out at -0.6.
First sub zero morning of winter and from the looks of the long range the last one for at least a couple of weeks.

Move that decimal CP and me temp - 6*
I think we break the string in Feb and why because we have had a Godzilla ENSO positive state, Hotlantic this year with a massive Bermuda High, unfavorable QBO and the malookia from Frank's Grandmother!!

Inquiry is needed on these temp station readings!

Re: January 2017 Observations & Discussions
on a side note it looks like dr Cohen's theory with the SAI is in peril. if any year should have a neg AO it was this year however the AO has not been neg so far this winter (dec1st +). latest forecast is slightly + much different from a few days ago where guidance had it dropping sign. neg. my guess is that there is some correlation to the AO and SAI however it's not 1 to 1. other factors must over ride his index. hopefully his research can help in the years to come with forecasting the AO out in time.

13 degrees here in Syosset. Clear skies, no wind and deep fresh snowpack. Someone out in central/eastern LI near Riverhead/Ridge area will flirt with 0 tonight.

west hampton hit -9 this morning. Wonder if they'll top it tomorrow?
9.1 here, I imagine below zero is a given again unless we get some kind of cloud cover before dawn.

Some snow or ice N&W of NYC tomorrow night. Then you'll change to rain early Wed. morning. Rain for everyone else. Should come to an end by mid-morning Wednesday.

Re: January 2017 Observations & Discussions
7* and the radar shows the leading edge of the precipitation in Central PA. If that gets here around midday that will be ahead of schedule and probably while we're still below freezing so I think we could see a brief period of light snow and then maybe some freezing rain, before it goes to rain showers this evening.

Re: January 2017 Observations & Discussions
Wow Bill. You're right. Models not picking up on that band of snow working through central PA. If it survives could begin snowing here at some point in the early afternoon. Then there will be a break before the main batch of precip arrives late tonight. NEPA, NNJ, and southern NY should be careful for ice tomorrow morning
