Fear not, Jman. While this was a nice change of pace (maybe an apology as CP put it for the lack of real winter around here) I think this was the end of the line for this recent cold pattern (at least THIS cold). Should start warming slowly this week and by next weekend could be in the upper 60s or low 70s, where we should be this time of year.

Re: May 2020 Observations & Discussions
Brownie oh it snowed out by you as my buddy in Kinnelon said it was a wind driven snow at 12:20 last night.
Squalls today for many and if you catch a deep convective band you will be in for some fun - graupel or sleet or snow.

I like your thinking Doc, 5 months and let's start tracking again. We will probably be below freezing again Monday and Tuesday nights but no more snow.

CP, as you well know being an old timer now, 5 months passes faster than the wink of a young girl's eye if I can channel a Bruce Springsteen song.We have to revert to the mean next winter, so I think we will do better than 50 plus inches then.Just my thoughts.

Re: May 2020 Observations & Discussions
Heavy squall for 20 minutes just starting to wind down. Accumulations began on grass and cold surfaces again. temp dropped from 41 to 35 during the squall.
If anyone talks about sun angle in late February next year and how the snow won't accumulate during the day, I may have to seek them out just to slap some sense into them, while holding photos from today.

Re: May 2020 Observations & Discussions
For those of us old enough to remember the May 9, 1977 snow event in our region, that was a much bigger deal snow wise in this area with very similar temperatures.
Parts of the area north of the city within 40 miles received several inches of snow, with slide mountain NY winning the jackpot with 27 inches. Areas surrounding Albany NY received a foot of snow east to Worcester MA which also received a foot. Although B oston received only a half inch and NYC a trace of snow it remains the latest measurbale snow in B oston and in NYC now tied by todays event.
With that said, the inch I received last night and the incredible snow squalls that many saw throughout the day today with daytime highs hovering in the high 30's and low 40's was certainly memorable.
Like I said earlier a very memorable ending to a historically horrible winter.

Re: May 2020 Observations & Discussions
Hey folks!! It’s been a long time since I’ve posted here, and generally anywhere, but I had to just walk away for most of this season because I was sick and tired of all the senseless wish casting, arguing, blaming, etc. on the forums. Anyway, I’m hoping a new season brings a needed reset to the forums, and that you are all staying safe and healthy!! A happy Mother’s Day to all of our moms out there today!!!
Just wanted to bump this from one of my rogue posts many weeks back, as I am sure we will be seeing this come up in conversation in coming days as people get curious about next week. I had followed it up during the first week of March to say the period from Week 3 of April through mid-May would have my attention for the first system of interest, but that was via work communications that I don’t currently have access to. Anyway, let’s discuss!!

Welcome back rb hope all is well. I certainly think we have to watxhbthwbtropics closely this year along the EC besides the Gulf coast again.

Re: May 2020 Observations & Discussions
Thanks, mugsy! Feels good to be back!! Yeah, I know JB is pretty excited about it, but I’m not so sure yet. I haven’t spent much time analyzing, but it could be quite a juxtaposition between the anomalously warm Gulf/Atlantic and a global configuration that starts off strongly favoring tropical activity in close early, then fades toward the middle and end of the warm season (during peak climatological tropical season). I think the MJO modulation could be the culprit, as we have seen this broad global bimodally distributed oscillation between favorable and non-favorable phases flip every four to five months. Just me spitballing for now, but it’s something I’m passively thinking about lol

Re: May 2020 Observations & Discussions
Another ho hum day, currently 52° intermittent sun and clouds with an occasional brief shower. Looks like possible record cold tonight and tomorrow night.Hoping for turn around by the end of the week with temps approaching 80° on Friday. That will be a welcome change. Still have heating system turning on at night, but the one caveat with that is home heating oil can be had for $1.13 a gallon. It's times like these when I wish I had a 500 gallon tank. Regular gas at Bj's $1.61 a gallon. Remember a few summers back when it was over $4.00 a gallon?
